A Recipe for You. From Me. Eating. Eating. Eating. Emotional Eating. We are together. We are family.
Let’s talk about snacks. I have been hearing that people at home with families, working and schooling from home are also “bored and eating everything in sight that is easy, i.e. chocolate.” When I told Liam we had a cupboard full of snacks for their time at home over the next few weeks, he said, “What? Where?”. The dumbfounded look I must have given him was enough to crack him up and repeat the question. He informed me that snacks are things that you can just grab and go, apples, granola bars, cheese sticks, jerky, etc. Individual packages of things that you can grab, unwrap and eat. Or in the case of fruit, just eat. I thought, ok. Let’s get Jessica back down to earth a bit on what families have been doing out of necessity and what companies have been providing out of need. Snacks. It seems few families have had the time to make “healthy” snacks for their families. Granola bars are quick and easy, but not always healthy. The amount of sodium and sugar in each bar is out of control. You can go with a Lara bar or an RX bar for twice the price, but then we run into the expense of it and decline the purchase for something cheaper like, a sweet, salty, dark chocolate peanut and almond bar loaded with sugar, carbs and very little protein. Ultimately staving off hunger for about 30 minutes if we are lucky.
My point is that I totally get it. I am not opposed to store bought granola bars or a candy bar now and then. The convenience of it all is hands down what in the end makes the decisions. Cost seems to be right next to it, but often times it is overly expensive for what we get. We could make twice as many of our own energy bites, snack packs or granola bars, control the amount of sugar, fat, carbs, protein, dairy, gluten, etc. for half the amount we spend on a box of 6 little packages or bars. But the time…I get it. Well, guess who has a little more time? You, your kids, your family. Yay for snack time!!!!!
I would like to give you a few snack options to try. Try something different. I know that when I make something I control the amount of sugar, fat, salt, protein, etc. that I put into it. I can certainly make it unhealthy, but why? You will be surprised at how tasty these little treats can be. One of our go to snacks in the house are a plate of fruit, nuts, veggies and hummus, beef sticks cheese and crackers. Here are 4 snack ideas for you and your family. Feel free to increase the number of servings and store some for the weekend or the week! Here we go…
